Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2009-2010. The airport was rendered obsolete and closed following the inauguration of the new Santa Rosa Regional Airport (IATA: ETR, ICAO: SERO) in January 2010, which was built to consolidate air traffic for the entire El Oro province.

Reason for Closure

Infrastructure Consolidation and Obsolescence. The Huaquillas airstrip was a small, basic facility with an unpaved runway. The Ecuadorian government developed the modern Santa Rosa Regional Airport to serve the entire region, including the cities of Machala, Santa Rosa, and Huaquillas, with a facility capable of handling larger commercial jet aircraft. The closure of the Huaquillas airstrip was part of this strategic plan to centralize and upgrade aviation infrastructure in the province.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the urban landscape of Huaquillas. The land formerly occupied by the runway and airport facilities has been converted into a large public park, the 'Parque Lineal de Huaquillas', which includes recreational areas, walkways, and sports facilities. Surrounding areas have also been developed with residential housing and streets, erasing any functional remnants of the airport.

Historical Significance

Huaquillas Airport was a small, local airstrip (pista de aterrizaje) primarily serving general aviation. Due to its strategic location in a major border city, it likely handled air taxi services, private flights, and potentially some governmental, police, or military flights for border surveillance and transport. It operated with a short, unpaved runway and minimal infrastructure, limiting its use to small, propeller-driven aircraft. Its significance was purely local, providing basic air access to the border area before it was superseded by a modern regional airport.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for public and residential use. The region's aviation needs are fully and more effectively met by the nearby Santa Rosa Regional Airport, which is located approximately 30 kilometers away and offers far superior infrastructure and services.
