Circa 2006. The airport's fate was sealed by a municipal plan (Lokalplan 3-341) adopted by Allerød Kommune in 2005, which rezoned the land for other uses. Flight operations ceased shortly thereafter.
The closure was primarily driven by urban expansion and economic interests. The land, located in a developing area north of Copenhagen, became highly valuable for commercial development. The Allerød municipality chose to rezone the area for a business park. Contributing factors included increasing noise complaints from nearby residential areas, which made continued aviation operations politically and socially untenable.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now the 'Allerød Business Park' (Erhvervskvarteret Vassingerød). The area is a commercial and light industrial zone, occupied by numerous company headquarters, warehouses, and office buildings. New roads have been constructed across the former airfield, and there are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other aviation-related infrastructure.
Allerød Airport, which at one time used the ICAO code EKAL, was a key general aviation (GA) airfield for the greater Copenhagen region. Established in the 1960s, it served as a base for several flying clubs (including ultralight clubs) and private aircraft owners. Its operations consisted mainly of recreational flying, flight instruction, and private air travel. With its grass runway of approximately 650 meters, it was a vibrant hub for the local aviation community and was sometimes referred to as 'Københavns Nærfelt' (Copenhagen's Near-Field).
There are zero prospects for reopening Allerød Airport. The land has been permanently and fully repurposed for commercial use. The complete redevelopment of the site into a business park makes any return to aviation activities physically and legally impossible.
