The site has not been formally repurposed for other uses like agriculture or construction but remains a dormant, non-functional airstrip.

Yako Airport was a basic regional aerodrome featuring a single unpaved, laterite runway (approximately 1200 meters). It was never served by scheduled commercial airlines. Its historical importance was as a utility airstrip for:
- **Government and Administrative Flights:** Connecting local authorities in the Passoré province with the capital, Ouagadougou.
- **Medical Services:** Facilitating medical evacuations (MEDEVAC) and public health missions, such as vaccine delivery and mobile clinics, to a relatively remote area.
- **Humanitarian Aid:** Used by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international bodies for delivering aid and personnel.
- **General Aviation:** Limited use by private charter or potentially for mining and resource exploration activities in the region.
It served as a critical infrastructure link for essential services, bypassing the often difficult and insecure road network.

There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening Yako Airport. A reopening would be entirely dependent on two critical conditions: a significant and lasting improvement in the security situation in the Nord Region, and a new, compelling economic or strategic justification for its reactivation. Given the ongoing conflict and instability in Burkina Faso, the likelihood of these conditions being met in the foreseeable future is extremely low.
