The heliport was closed and dismantled between 2004 and 2006. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the helipad markings were still visible in 2004, but by 2006, the area had been completely redeveloped for industrial use.
The closure was a result of economic and operational restructuring. The heliport was located within the Buna-Werke chemical plant, which was acquired by Dow Chemical in 1995 after German reunification. The new management likely deemed a private corporate heliport to be cost-ineffective and logistically unnecessary. The land was subsequently repurposed for the expansion and modernization of the chemical processing facilities.
The site of the former heliport is no longer recognizable. It has been fully integrated into the active Dow Olefinverbund GmbH chemical plant. The exact coordinates now point to an area covered with a dense network of industrial pipes, storage tanks, and other chemical processing infrastructure. All traces of the helipad, windsock, and associated markings have been removed.
Schkopau Heliport served the 'Buna-Werke' (VEB Chemische Werke Buna), one of the largest and most strategically important chemical industrial complexes in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Its primary purpose was for corporate and VIP transport, flying executives and government officials to and from the site. Given the hazardous nature of the plant, it may have also been designated for emergency medical or security operations. The ICAO code DE-0855 indicates it was officially registered as a special landing site (Sonderlandeplatz) in post-reunification Germany before its closure.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The site has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for critical industrial operations. Re-establishing a heliport would require the demolition of essential plant infrastructure and is not feasible. The transportation needs of the facility are now met by ground transport and the close proximity of the major Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ), located approximately 20 kilometers away.
