Military flight operations ceased in 1996. The complete closure of the military installation and handover to civilian authorities was a gradual process that concluded around 2010.
Military Conversion. The closure was a direct result of the end of the Cold War and the subsequent reorganization and downsizing of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). The base, primarily a training facility, was deemed surplus to requirements.
The former air base has been successfully converted into a large civilian area. The site is now home to the 'Gewerbepark Fliegerhorst Goslar', a commercial and industrial park with numerous businesses occupying repurposed hangars and newly constructed buildings. A significant portion of the former runway and airfield has been transformed into one of Germany's largest solar farms, the 'Solarpark Fliegerhorst Goslar'. Additionally, parts of the area are used for a driving safety center and other recreational purposes.
The air base, known as 'Fliegerhorst Goslar', was constructed in 1935 as part of Germany's rearmament and officially opened in 1936. During World War II, it served as an operational and training base for various Luftwaffe units, including reconnaissance, bomber, and fighter wings. After the war, it was captured by Allied forces and used by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) as 'RAF Goslar'. In 1957, the base was handed back to the newly formed West German Bundeswehr. For most of its post-war history, it was a key training center for the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), most notably housing the 'Luftwaffenausbildungsregiment 1' (Air Force Training Regiment 1) for basic training of recruits.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening Goslar Air Base for aviation. The extensive redevelopment of the site, particularly the construction of the large solar park directly on the former runway and the establishment of a thriving commercial park, makes any future use as an airport infeasible.
