Military defeat and post-war disarmament. The seaplane base was captured by British forces at the end of World War II and subsequently dismantled. The German military did not re-establish it as an active air base in the post-war era.
The site has been completely redeveloped for civilian use. The area of the former seaplane base is now a popular recreational and residential district. It features the public beach 'Strand Solitüde', a large marina ('Marina Fahrensodde'), sailing clubs, restaurants, and residential housing. There are no remaining traces of the original hangars, ramps, or military infrastructure.
Fahrensodde was a historically significant German naval seaplane station (Seefliegerhorst). Established during World War I for the Imperial German Navy, it played a key role in maritime control and reconnaissance over the Baltic Sea. It was reactivated in the 1930s and used extensively by the Luftwaffe during World War II. Operations included maritime patrol, anti-shipping missions, and air-sea rescue. Aircraft such as the Heinkel He 59, Heinkel He 115, and Dornier Do 18 were based here. Its strategic location on the Flensburg Fjord made it a vital asset for German naval aviation in two world wars. The ICAO code DE-0802 is an unofficial identifier, likely from a historical or enthusiast database, as official German ICAO codes begin with 'ED'.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the site as an airport. The land has been fully integrated into the urban and recreational landscape of Flensburg, and the necessary infrastructure for aviation operations was removed decades ago. Its current use as a public beach and marina is well-established.
