Approximately 1990-1992
The primary reason for the closure was the German Reunification in 1990. This political and economic shift led to the dissolution of the German Democratic Republic's (GDR) state-owned agricultural system and its supporting infrastructure. Specifically, the state airline 'Interflug' and its 'Agrarflug' (Agricultural Aviation) division, which operated this airstrip, were liquidated. The large collective farms (Landwirtschaftliche Produktionsgenossenschaften - LPGs) were broken up or privatized, eliminating the centralized demand for large-scale, state-run crop-dusting operations that the airstrip was built to support. Furthermore, new environmental regulations in the reunified Germany placed stricter limits on the aerial application of pesticides and fertilizers.
The site is no longer used for aviation. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms that a large solar farm (Photovoltaikanlage) has been constructed on a significant portion of the former airfield grounds, including parts of the runway area. The faint outline of the grass runway is still visible in the surrounding landscape, but it is overgrown and bisected by the solar panel arrays. The land has been completely repurposed for renewable energy generation and agriculture.
The Meyenburg Airstrip was a typical 'Agrarflugplatz' (agricultural airfield) within the extensive network of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It held no major military or civil transport significance but was a crucial component of the GDR's industrialized agricultural economy. Its sole purpose was to serve as a base for agricultural aircraft. Operations were carried out by Interflug's Agrarflug division, using specialized aircraft like the Czechoslovakian Zlín Z-37 Čmelák and later the Polish PZL-106 Kruk. These planes conducted crop dusting, pest control, and aerial fertilization for the large collective farms in the Prignitz district. The airstrip is a relic of the GDR's centrally planned economy and its approach to agriculture.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Meyenburg Airstrip. The original economic reason for its existence has vanished, and the land has since been repurposed for a large-scale solar energy project. Re-establishing it as an airfield would be economically unviable and would require the costly removal of the solar farm. Therefore, the prospect of reopening is considered non-existent.
