Approximately 1990-1991
Economic and political reasons. The airfield was an agricultural aviation base ('Agrarflugplatz') operated by the German Democratic Republic's (GDR) state airline, Interflug. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, Interflug was liquidated, and its state-run agricultural aviation division was dissolved. The economic model was no longer viable, leading to the closure of its network of specialized airfields, including Niepars.
The site has been completely repurposed and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The entire area of the former runway and adjacent grounds is now occupied by the 'Solarpark ObermĂĽtzkow/Niepars', a large photovoltaic power plant. The solar farm was constructed around 2011-2012, effectively erasing the last remnants of the aviation infrastructure.
Niepars Airfield was a functional part of the GDR's agricultural infrastructure. It was not a public or major military airport but served a vital economic purpose. As an 'Agrarflugplatz' for Interflug's agricultural division ('Wirtschaftsflug'), it was a base for specialized aircraft used for crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control over the large collective farms ('Landwirtschaftliche Produktionsgenossenschaft' - LPG) in the region. The primary aircraft types operating from such fields were typically the ZlĂn Z-37 ÄŚmelák and the Antonov An-2. The airfield represented the GDR's model of industrialized, state-controlled agriculture.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently redeveloped into a large-scale solar energy farm, a long-term industrial use that makes any return to aviation activities impossible.
