Approximately 2011. The airfield was officially closed to allow for the construction of a solar park, which began in 2011 and was commissioned by early 2012.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The site was sold/leased for the construction of the 'Solarpark Stockheim-Kronach', a large-scale photovoltaic power plant. This was deemed a more economically viable use of the land compared to operating a small, special-purpose airfield.
The entire site of the former airfield has been converted into the 'Solarpark Stockheim-Kronach'. The land where the runway, taxiways, and aprons once existed is now completely covered by thousands of solar panels. All aviation-related infrastructure has been removed, and the site is now a renewable energy generation facility.
The airport was officially known as Sonderlandeplatz Stockheim-Kronach. It was a local general aviation airfield serving the district of Kronach in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. The primary operator was the 'Luftsportgruppe Stockheim e.V.' (Stockheim Air Sports Group). The airfield was a hub for recreational flying, including private powered aircraft, ultralights, and possibly gliding. It featured a single grass runway (approximately 08/26) and provided essential infrastructure for local aviation enthusiasts. The ICAO code 'DE-0221' was a national German identifier for small airfields and landing sites not recognized in the international ICAO system.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for long-term energy production with the installation of a multi-megawatt solar park. Reverting the site to an airfield would be financially and logistically prohibitive.
