Approximately 2010-2011. The operating license for the airfield was officially revoked by the Luftamt SĂĽdbayern (Southern Bavaria Aviation Authority) in early 2011 to clear the site for new development.
Land-use conversion for renewable energy. The primary reason for the closure was the construction of the 'Solarpark Ohlstadt-Eschenlohe', a large-scale photovoltaic power plant. The land was repurposed from aviation use to energy generation, a decision driven by Germany's renewable energy goals.
The site of the former airfield is now fully occupied by the 'Solarpark Ohlstadt-Eschenlohe'. The entire area, including the former runway and taxiways, is covered with thousands of solar panels, making it one of the larger solar farms in Bavaria. The flying club that once operated there, Fliegergruppe Werdenfels e.V., has since relocated its activities to the Pömetsried airfield (EDMP) near Ohlstadt.
Eschenlohe Airfield was a 'Sonderlandeplatz' (Special Landing Site), meaning landings required prior permission. It was a significant local hub for recreational and general aviation in the scenic Werdenfels region of the Bavarian Alps. The airfield primarily handled glider (Segelflug) and ultralight aircraft (Ultraleichtflug) operations. It was home to the local flying club, 'Fliegergruppe Werdenfels e.V.'. The airfield featured an 800 x 30 meter grass runway and was valued by pilots for its challenging but beautiful alpine setting. It held no significant military or commercial transport role.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed with the construction of the solar park, which is a long-term infrastructure investment. A return to aviation use is not feasible.
