Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

The airfield officially ceased all flight operations on December 31, 2012.

Reason for Closure

The closure was the result of a land lease issue. The owner of the property, Baron von La Rosée, terminated the long-standing lease agreement with the operating aviation club, Luftsportverein Dürabuch e.V., and chose not to renew it. The club was unable to negotiate a new agreement, purchase the land, or find a suitable and affordable alternative location, forcing it to cease operations and eventually dissolve.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been fully converted back to agricultural use. The grass runway and taxiways are no longer maintained, and the land has been integrated into the surrounding private farmland. Any buildings that served as hangars or a clubhouse have been removed or repurposed, and there is no remaining aviation infrastructure on the site.

Historical Significance

For approximately 40 years (from the early 1970s to 2012), Dürabuch Glider Airfield was a vital local hub for recreational and sport aviation. It was operated by the Luftsportverein Dürabuch e.V. and its primary function was glider flying (Segelflug). Operations included glider launches via both winch and aero tow, as well as flights with motor gliders and the light aircraft used for towing. The airfield served as a training facility for aspiring pilots and a community base for its approximately 100 members, fostering general aviation in the region west of Munich.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Dürabuch Glider Airfield. The original operating club was disbanded following the closure, and the land is now in private use for agriculture. Re-establishing an airfield would require acquiring the land or a new long-term lease and navigating significant regulatory and financial challenges, making a reopening highly improbable.
