Approximately 2014. The airfield officially ceased operations to prepare the site for new construction which began around 2015.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The site was sold to the automotive company BMW Group for the construction of a major logistics center. The value of the land for industrial development far outweighed its value as a small general aviation airfield.
The site has been completely transformed and is now occupied by the BMW Group's 'Dynamikzentrum' (Dynamics Center). This is a massive, state-of-the-art after-sales logistics and parts distribution center that began operations in 2016. The construction completely obliterated all traces of the former airfield, including the runway, taxiways, and hangars.
Feldkirchen-Mitterharthausen was a 'Sonderlandeplatz' (a special landing site with fewer regulations than a public airport), primarily serving the recreational and general aviation community. It was a hub for ultralight aircraft and was home to the local flying club, 'Ultraleicht-Fliegerclub Straubing-Wallersdorf e.V.'. The airfield featured a single grass runway (approximately 500 meters long) and basic facilities like a small hangar. Its significance was local, providing an important base for private pilots and flight training in the Straubing-Bogen district.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped into a strategic, large-scale industrial facility for a major global corporation, making any future aviation use impossible.
