Circa early 2000s. The parent military air base (Žatec Air Base, former ICAO: LKZA) was officially closed in 1993. The specific ultralight strip CZ-0271, which operated on the site post-military use, ceased to exist when large-scale redevelopment began in the early 2000s.
The closure was a direct result of a strategic government decision to re-purpose the entire former military air base. After the decommissioning of the Žatec Air Base following the end of the Cold War, the vast area was designated for economic redevelopment. The land was converted into a large-scale industrial park, making any aviation activities impossible.
The site has been completely and irreversibly transformed into the 'Triangle Strategic Industrial Zone' (Průmyslová zóna Triangle). It is one of the largest and most significant industrial parks in the Czech Republic. The former runways, taxiways, and military infrastructure have been entirely removed and replaced by massive manufacturing plants, logistics centers, and supporting roads. Major international corporations, particularly in the automotive and manufacturing sectors, have built facilities there, including Nexen Tire, Gestamp, and Yanfeng Automotive Interiors.
The site's primary historical significance is not as the small ultralight strip CZ-0271, but as the former Žatec Air Base. This was a major and strategically important military airfield for the Czechoslovak People's Army Air Force and later the Czech Air Force during the Cold War. It was home to the 11th Fighter Regiment, operating iconic aircraft such as the MiG-15, MiG-19, MiG-21, and, for a short period, the advanced MiG-29 'Fulcrum'. The base was a key component of the Warsaw Pact's air defense network. After the military's departure in 1993, the designation CZ-0271 was used for a small, informal area on the massive grounds for ultralight and sport flying activities before the site was cleared for its new purpose.
There are zero prospects for reopening the site as an airfield. The land has been fully redeveloped for heavy industrial use at a cost of billions of CZK. The aviation infrastructure is gone, and the area is now a vital economic hub for the Ústí nad Labem Region, employing thousands of people in manufacturing and logistics. Its value and purpose are now entirely industrial.
