The airport closed in stages. Military operations ceased in the mid-1950s (around 1956), with operations consolidating at the nearby Brno-Tuřany airport. The site continued to be used as a civil aerodrome for light aircraft and gliders until its final closure in the late 1990s or early 2000s, with the national ICAO code CZ-0267 being officially deleted from records around 2003.
The closure was a two-part process. The initial military closure was due to obsolescence; its grass runways were unsuitable for modern jet aircraft, leading the Czechoslovak Air Force to move to the newly constructed concrete runways at the adjacent Tuřany airport. The final closure of the remaining civil/aeroclub airfield was driven by economic reasons, specifically urban and industrial expansion. The valuable land was re-purposed for the development of the Černovická Terasa industrial and commercial zone.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as an airfield. It is now the location of the 'CTPark Brno' and the 'Černovická Terasa' industrial and logistics park. The area is occupied by large warehouses, distribution centers for companies like DHL and Wistron, light manufacturing facilities, and other commercial buildings. There are no remnants of the runways or hangars. A small monument dedicated to the fallen airmen of the 5th Air Regiment, which was based there, is located nearby as a memorial to the site's aviation history.
Černovice was Brno's first and historically most significant airport for the first half of the 20th century.
- **Establishment:** Founded around 1913 as a military airfield for the Austro-Hungarian Air Service.
- **WWI & First Republic:** Served as a key military base during World War I and became a major hub for the newly formed Czechoslovak Air Force after 1918, housing fighter and bomber regiments.
- **WWII:** During the German occupation in World War II, the airfield was taken over and utilized by the Luftwaffe.
- **Post-WWII:** After the war, it was returned to the Czechoslovak Air Force but its importance waned with the rise of jet aviation.
- **Civil Aviation:** It handled Brno's initial civil air traffic before these operations were transferred to Tuřany. After the military's departure, the site became home to one of the largest Svazarm (Union for Cooperation with the Army) aeroclubs in the country, serving as a major center for gliding, parachuting, and light aircraft training for several decades.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been fully and irreversibly developed for industrial and commercial use. The city of Brno is adequately served by the nearby Brno-Tuřany International Airport (LKTB / BRQ) for all commercial, cargo, and general aviation needs.
