Likely fell into disuse and was officially closed during the 1990s. The exact date is not documented, but the closure aligns with Cuba's 'Special Period,' an extended economic crisis that began in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Primarily economic reasons. The airport was an agricultural airstrip supporting the local sugar industry. The economic crisis of the 'Special Period' caused a severe contraction of the sugar industry and a critical shortage of fuel, aircraft, and spare parts (mostly of Soviet origin). This led to the grounding of most of Cuba's agricultural aviation fleet and the abandonment of its supporting airfields, including Eugenia Airport.
The airport is completely abandoned and in a state of advanced decay. Satellite imagery confirms that the paved runway, while still visible, is heavily cracked, deteriorated, and overgrown with vegetation, making it unusable for any aviation activity. The site has effectively reverted to the surrounding agricultural landscape, and any remaining buildings are derelict or have been repurposed for local farm use. There is no military presence or any other official activity at the site.
Eugenia Airport was a vital component of Cuba's 20th-century agricultural infrastructure, specifically for the once-dominant sugar industry. Its primary role was to serve as a base for 'aviación agrícola' (agricultural aviation). Operations consisted mainly of crop-dusting aircraft, such as the Antonov An-2, which were used for the aerial application of pesticides and fertilizers on the vast sugarcane plantations in the Ciego de Ávila province. The airport was operated by the state-owned Empresa Nacional de Servicios Aéreos (ENSA) and represents a now-defunct era of large-scale, state-sponsored agriculture in Cuba.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Eugenia Airport. The economic conditions that led to its closure have not been reversed, and the cost to repair the runway and rebuild infrastructure would be substantial. Given the existence of hundreds of similar abandoned airfields across Cuba and the diminished scale of the industry it once served, the prospect of it ever being reactivated for aviation purposes is considered extremely low to non-existent.
