Falcon Air Force Base Helipad

Military base renaming and administrative restructuring. Falcon Air Force Base was officially renamed Schriever Air Force Base on June 5, 1998. The helipad's public identifier, CO79, was retired as part of this transition. The closure was not due to economic issues, accidents, or a decline in operations, but rather an administrative change.

The physical site of the former helipad is located within the secure perimeter of the active Schriever Space Force Base. The base is a premier United States Space Force installation, vital to national security and home to units like Space Delta 8, which operates the GPS constellation. While the CO79 identifier is defunct, the physical helipad and other landing zones on the base remain active for official military helicopter operations supporting the base's ongoing mission.

The Falcon AFB Helipad was an integral support facility for Falcon Air Force Base, which was activated in 1985. The base was established as the master control station for the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other critical military satellite constellations. The helipad (CO79) supported these high-security operations by providing capabilities for VIP transport, emergency medical evacuation (medevac), security overflights of the large installation, and general utility transport for personnel and light cargo.

There are zero prospects for reopening the facility under the CO79 identifier or for any public/civilian use. The site is part of a critical, high-security military installation and will remain under the exclusive control of the U.S. Department of Defense.
