Approximately 2008-2010. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway being progressively encroached upon by mining activities starting around 2008 and completely disappearing by 2010.
The airport was closed and physically removed due to the expansion of the Cerrejón open-pit coal mine. The land the airport occupied was excavated to become part of the 'Tajo Oreganal' (Oreganal Pit), making its closure a direct result of planned mining operations. It was not closed for economic failure or an accident, but rather because the land it sat on was scheduled for resource extraction.
The site of the former airport no longer exists. The land has been completely excavated and is now an active part of the Cerrejón open-pit coal mine. There are no remaining traces of the runway or any associated facilities; the area is now a large mining pit.
Oreganal Airport was a private airstrip that served as a critical logistical asset for the Cerrejón coal mine, one of the largest open-pit coal mines in the world. It primarily handled the transport of company personnel, contractors, essential light cargo, and likely supported aerial surveying and emergency operations for the mine's early-to-mid stages. Its existence was tied directly to the operational needs of the 'Tajo Oreganal' section of the mine before aviation services were consolidated at the larger, more modern Cerrejón Airport (SKCN).
There are zero prospects for reopening. The physical location of the airport has been permanently eliminated by mining activity. The aviation needs of the Cerrejón mine are fully served by its other dedicated, modern airports: Cerrejón Airport (SKCN) and Puerto Bolívar Airport (SKPB).
