March 24, 2022. All flight operations ceased upon the official opening and transfer of services to the new Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by the new, larger, and more modern Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport (IATA: ZHA, ICAO: ZGZJ). The old Xintang airport's location within the city center restricted urban expansion, its facilities were outdated, and its single runway could not accommodate growing passenger demand or larger aircraft. The closure was part of a strategic plan to develop a regional aviation hub and free up valuable urban land for redevelopment.
The site has been fully decommissioned. The land is currently undergoing planning for a major urban redevelopment project known as the 'Zhanjiang Central Axis'. The plan is to transform the former airport grounds into a new central business district for Zhanjiang, featuring commercial centers, high-end residential areas, public parks, and cultural facilities. Demolition of the old terminal and infrastructure is part of this process.
Originally built in 1936 during the French administration of Guangzhouwan, the airport had significant historical importance. It was expanded and used as a military airbase during World War II. After 1949, it became a key dual-use (military-civilian) airport for western Guangdong province. For over 85 years, it served as Zhanjiang's primary air link, handling domestic flights to major cities across China. Its official identifiers when active were IATA: ZHA and ICAO: ZGZJ. The name 'Xintang' refers to its location on Xintang Street in the Xiashan District.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. Its closure is permanent, as it has been functionally and strategically replaced by Zhanjiang Wuchuan International Airport, which is designed to serve the region's long-term needs. The valuable land in the city center is slated for complete redevelopment, making a return to aviation operations impossible.
Love it!
