The site is an active, large-scale construction zone. The project involves extensive land reclamation off the coast of Dadeng Island in the Xiang'an District. The airport has no operational history as it is a new development. Its significance is entirely future-oriented. It is being built to replace the existing, capacity-constrained Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN/ZSAM).
