Approximately 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the heliport was still present in late 2014 but had been completely demolished and the site was under major redevelopment by early 2016.
Urban redevelopment for commercial and residential use. The heliport occupied prime coastal real estate that was highly valuable for property development. As Dongfang city expanded, the land was repurposed for the construction of high-end resorts and residential complexes. The heliport's operations were subsequently relocated to a new, more suitable facility.
The site of the former heliport has been completely redeveloped. It is now occupied by large, upscale residential and resort properties, including the 'Oriental Pearl Coast' (东方·海郡) complex. There are no physical remnants of the original hangars, helipads, or other aviation facilities.
The Hainan Dongfang General Aviation Heliport was a vital logistical hub for China's offshore oil and gas industry. Its primary purpose was to support the operations of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) in the South China Sea. It handled the transportation of personnel, supplies, and equipment to and from offshore platforms, most notably serving the major Dongfang 1-1 natural gas field. For over a decade, from the early 2000s until its closure, it was a key piece of infrastructure for the region's energy sector.
There are zero prospects for reopening the heliport at its original location (CN-0393), as the land has been permanently and densely redeveloped. The aviation services for the region have been transferred to a new, larger, and more modern facility: the Dongfang Datian General Airport (ICAO: ZYDF). This new airport, located further inland, has assumed and expanded upon the roles of the old heliport, serving offshore oil support, low-altitude tourism, and emergency services for the Dongfang area.
