Approximately late 2017. The airfield was rendered obsolete and officially closed upon the opening of the new Lincang Yongde Airport (IATA: YJ, ICAO: ZPYJ), which commenced operations on December 26, 2017.
Replacement and economic development. The old Yongde Airfield was a very basic airstrip with a short, unpaved or gravel runway, making it unsuitable for modern commercial aircraft. It was closed and replaced by the newly constructed Lincang Yongde Airport to boost the local economy, promote tourism, and provide reliable, modern air transport for the region, a role the old airfield could not fulfill.
The site is decommissioned and has been repurposed. An analysis of recent satellite imagery shows that the land is being redeveloped. The distinct runway outline is still partially visible, but sections have been converted into a local road. New structures, likely for industrial or agricultural processing, have been built directly on the former airfield grounds. Other areas appear to be used for farming or are overgrown. The site is no longer functional as an airfield in any capacity.
Yongde Airfield (CN-0390) served as a rudimentary general aviation facility for a remote, mountainous area. It was not a commercial passenger airport. Its operations were limited to small, short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft. The airfield was primarily used for agricultural purposes (like crop dusting), forestry support, emergency services, and potentially some limited government or private transport. Its historical significance lies in being the first point of air access for Yongde County before modern infrastructure was developed.
None. The prospects for reopening are zero. The airfield was permanently replaced by the far superior Lincang Yongde Airport, which is located just a few kilometers to the southwest and is fully equipped to handle modern passenger and cargo traffic. The original site's ongoing redevelopment for non-aviation purposes confirms its permanent closure.
