The airport was closed to all commercial traffic upon the opening of the new, larger, and more modern Nanchang Changbei International Airport (ZSCN / KHN). The Qingyunpu airport was located too close to the expanding city center, causing issues with noise pollution, safety, and posing a significant constraint on urban development. The new airport was built further away from the city to accommodate larger aircraft and handle projected growth in air traffic.
The airport is permanently closed to public air traffic. The land has been extensively redeveloped and integrated into the urban fabric of Nanchang's Qingyunpu District. Satellite imagery shows that a large portion of the original runway still exists and has been converted into a major city road, part of Hongdu South Avenue (洪都南大道). The former airport grounds are now occupied by residential complexes, commercial buildings, and parks. However, a significant section of the airfield, including hangars and aprons, remains part of the sprawling Hongdu Aviation Industry Group's manufacturing complex and is used for ground operations, aircraft assembly, and industrial purposes, but not for regular flight operations.
Nanchang Qingyunpu Airport, also known as Sanjiadian Airport (三家店机场), was the primary airport for Nanchang and the Jiangxi province for decades. Its history dates back to the 1930s. It was a dual-use airport with immense strategic importance.
1. **Civilian Operations:** It handled all domestic flights for Nanchang, connecting the provincial capital to major cities across China.
2. **Military and Industrial Operations:** Its most significant role was serving as the factory and test airfield for the adjacent Hongdu Aviation Industry Group (HAIG), formerly the Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation. This is where numerous famous Chinese aircraft were designed, built, and first flown. Notable aircraft associated with this airport include the Nanchang CJ-6 (a widely used primary trainer) and the Nanchang Q-5 (a supersonic attack aircraft). The airport was a critical hub for China's aviation industry and military aircraft development.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Nanchang Qingyunpu Airport for any form of public or commercial aviation. The complete urban encroachment, redevelopment of the land, and the successful operation of Nanchang Changbei International Airport make its revival as an airport physically impossible and strategically unnecessary.
