Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

March 25, 2008

Reason for Closure

Relocation and replacement due to urban expansion and operational limitations. The old airport was located in what became the city center, which severely restricted its potential for expansion. Its runway and facilities were inadequate for handling the increasing volume of air traffic and larger, modern aircraft required to support Ganzhou's rapid economic growth. A new, larger airport was constructed at a new location to meet these demands.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of Ganzhou's modern urban core in the Zhanggong District. The former runway has been transformed into a major city thoroughfare named Huangjin Avenue (黄金大道, 'Golden Avenue'). The land now hosts numerous high-rise residential buildings, commercial complexes, public parks (such as the Ganzhou Central Park), and civic institutions including the Ganzhou Natural History Museum and the City Planning Exhibition Hall. There are no physical remnants of the airport's aviation infrastructure.

Historical Significance

The Former Ganzhou Huangjin Airport was originally constructed in 1936 and served as a crucial military airbase during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. After 1949, it became a dual-use civil-military airport operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force. Scheduled civilian flights began intermittently in 1959 and resumed permanently in 1987. For decades, it was the sole air gateway for the city of Ganzhou and the surrounding southern Jiangxi province, playing a vital role in the region's connectivity and economic development. It operated with the IATA code KOW and ICAO code ZSGZ, both of which were transferred to the new airport upon its opening.

Reopening Prospects

None. The site has been fully and irreversibly redeveloped into a dense urban district. There are no plans or possibilities for it to ever be used as an airport again. All air services for Ganzhou are now handled by the new Ganzhou Huangjin Airport (IATA: KOW, ICAO: ZSGZ), which is located approximately 16 kilometers from the city center.
