July 1996 (Cessation of civilian operations)
Replacement by a new, larger airport. Civilian operations were relocated to the newly constructed Weihai Dashuibo International Airport (WEH/ZSYH) to accommodate growing passenger demand and larger aircraft, which the old airport's limited facilities could not support. The site then reverted to its original, exclusive military use.
The site is not abandoned. It reverted to its primary function and is currently an active People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) base. Satellite imagery confirms a well-maintained facility with a single runway (approximately 2,200 meters), taxiways, and numerous hardened aircraft shelters, indicating ongoing and significant military operations.
Originally a People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) base, Wendeng Air Base was approved for dual military-civilian use in 1987. It commenced commercial operations in July 1989, becoming the first airport to serve the city of Weihai. It played a vital role in connecting the rapidly developing coastal city to major domestic destinations like Beijing and Shanghai. Its relatively short runway and small terminal became insufficient for Weihai's economic growth, prompting the construction of a modern replacement.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the base to civilian air traffic. The city of Weihai is adequately served by the modern Weihai Dashuibo International Airport, and the site's strategic importance as an active military air base makes a return to dual-use operations highly unlikely.
