Civil operations ceased on or around September 1, 1987. The facility may have retained some military function for a period afterward before being fully decommissioned.
The primary reason for closure was its replacement by the new, modern Meizhou Meixian Airport (IATA: MXZ, ICAO: ZGMX), which opened on September 1, 1987. The old airport, known locally as Meixian Changgangji Airport (梅县长岗岌机场), was located too close to the expanding city center. Its runway was too short and its facilities were inadequate to handle larger, modern aircraft and the growing demand for air travel. The relocation was part of a broader economic development plan for the region, freeing up valuable urban land and providing Meizhou with an airport capable of supporting future growth.
The former airport site has been completely and thoroughly redeveloped. It is now an integral part of the urban landscape of Meixian District. The runway, taxiways, and terminal buildings have been demolished. The land is now occupied by major city roads (such as Meixian Avenue/Meixian Dadao), commercial properties, residential complexes, and government buildings. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a dense urban environment with no visible remnants of the former airfield.
This airport served as the primary air gateway to Meizhou and the surrounding Hakka region for several decades. It was a dual-use civil and military air base, a common configuration for regional airports in China during that era. The ICAO code 'CN-0075' is a non-official identifier often used in databases to catalogue smaller or closed airfields, reflecting its status. The airport handled domestic flights, connecting Meizhou with provincial hubs like Guangzhou. Its operational limitations were a significant bottleneck for the local economy, which ultimately necessitated the construction of its replacement.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The site has been permanently repurposed for urban development, making a return to aviation use physically impossible. All of Meizhou's air services are handled by the current Meizhou Meixian Airport (MXZ/ZGMX), which is located approximately 5 km to the south of the old site and has superior facilities.
