Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

May 25, 1999. The last flight departed on the evening of May 24, 1999, and all operations were officially transferred to the new airport the following morning.

Reason for Closure

The airport was closed and replaced by the new, much larger Haikou Meilan International Airport (IATA: HAK, ICAO: ZGHK). The primary reasons for the replacement were:
1. **Urban Encroachment:** Dayingshan Airport was located in what became the city center, posing significant safety risks and creating noise pollution for the surrounding urban population.
2. **Capacity Limitations:** Its location prevented any further expansion of the runway or terminal facilities. By the 1990s, with Hainan's designation as a Special Economic Zone, passenger and cargo traffic had grown exponentially, far exceeding the airport's design capacity.
3. **Modernization:** A new, modern airport was needed to handle larger aircraft, increase flight capacity, and serve as a more fitting gateway for the rapidly developing province.

Current Status

The airport site has been completely demolished and has undergone a total transformation into the new political, cultural, and commercial heart of Haikou. The former 2,500-meter runway has been converted into Guoxing Avenue (国兴大道, 'National Prosperity Avenue'), a major ten-lane city boulevard. The area is now known as the Dayingshan Central Business District (CBD) and is home to numerous prominent landmarks, including:
- The Hainan Provincial Government complex
- Hainan Provincial Museum
- Hainan Provincial Library
- Sun Moon Plaza (日月广场), a massive mixed-use development with one of the world's largest duty-free shopping malls.
- Numerous high-rise office buildings, luxury hotels, and residential complexes.

Historical Significance

Haikou Dayingshan Airport (former IATA: HAK, ICAO: ZJHK) was the main airport for Hainan Island for over half a century. Originally constructed by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942 during the Second Sino-Japanese War, it became the primary civil and military air hub for Hainan after World War II. It was instrumental in the economic take-off of Hainan, particularly after the island became a province and a Special Economic Zone in 1988. As the sole major air gateway, it handled all domestic flights and an increasing number of international charter flights, connecting the island to mainland China and other parts of Asia. By the time of its closure, it was one of China's busiest airports, but its aging infrastructure was overwhelmed by the boom in tourism and business.

Reopening Prospects

None. There is zero possibility of the airport reopening. The land has been fully and irreversibly redeveloped into a high-value, dense urban district. Its aviation function was permanently transferred to Haikou Meilan International Airport, which is located approximately 15 km (9.3 miles) southeast of the old site and has since been significantly expanded to meet growing demand.
