Approximately April 17, 2014 (for all civilian operations)
Replacement and relocation of civilian services. The airport's civilian functions were transferred to the new, larger Dandong Langtou International Airport (IATA: DDG, ICAO: ZYDD), which was built to accommodate larger aircraft and growing passenger demand. The original site was fully converted for military-only use.
The site is an active and important People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) airbase, often referred to as Dandong Airbase. It is no longer open to the public or used for any scheduled commercial or general aviation flights. Satellite imagery shows it is well-maintained with military infrastructure, including hardened aircraft shelters.
The old Dandong Langtou Airport was a historically significant dual-use (civil-military) airfield. Its primary importance stems from its strategic location on the Yalu River, directly across from North Korea. During the Korean War (1950-1953), when Dandong was known as Antung, the airfield was a major forward base for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and Soviet Air Force units supporting North Korean forces. It was a key hub for MiG-15 fighters operating in the infamous 'MiG Alley'. After the war, it continued to serve as a crucial PLAAF airbase while also handling all domestic commercial flights for the city of Dandong until its civilian closure in 2014.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the old site to civilian traffic. Its role has been permanently superseded by the modern Dandong Langtou International Airport (DDG), which is located approximately 14 kilometers away and is fully equipped to handle the region's air travel needs.
