The airport was permanently closed and its land repurposed for agriculture sometime between 2010 and 2012. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still visible and relatively clear in 2010, but by 2012 it was being actively farmed over with crop rows bisecting the former airstrip.
Economic reasons and land repurposing. The airport was a private airstrip located on the 'Fundo Naicura,' a large agricultural estate. The closure was a private decision by the landowner to convert the airstrip into productive farmland to maximize cultivation area. This is a common fate for private airstrips in fertile regions like Chile's Central Valley, where the land value for high-yield crops (like vineyards or fruit orchards) is substantial.
The airport is permanently closed and no longer exists. The site has been fully reclaimed for agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows the land where the runway once lay is now completely integrated into the surrounding fields and is actively cultivated. All aviation infrastructure, including any potential markings or basic facilities, has been removed.
Fundo Naicura Airport was a small, private airfield with a single dirt/grass runway approximately 900 meters (2,953 feet) long. Its operations were limited and served the needs of the agricultural estate it was named after. Its primary functions would have been supporting agricultural aviation (crop dusting, spraying) and providing private air transport for the owners and managers of the Fundo. It held no public, commercial, or military significance.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Fundo Naicura Airport. The closure is considered permanent as the land has been fundamentally repurposed for high-value agriculture. Re-establishing an airport at this location would be economically unfeasible, requiring the purchase of valuable farmland and significant reconstruction.
