Mansel Airport

Economic reasons, specifically urban and industrial expansion. The airport's strategic location adjacent to Chile's primary north-south highway (Ruta 5 Sur) made the land highly valuable for logistics and commercial development. The owner sold the property for redevelopment as it was more profitable than continuing aviation operations.

The site has been completely redeveloped into a major industrial and logistics park. The former runway and airport facilities have been replaced by large-scale warehouses and distribution centers, most notably the primary Distribution Center for Walmart Chile. While faint outlines of the southern end of the runway are still visible on satellite imagery, the land is entirely dedicated to commercial and industrial use.

Mansel Airport was a private airfield that primarily served the general aviation and agricultural sectors. Its key operations included supporting the intensive agriculture of the Paine region through aerial application (crop dusting). It also functioned as a base for private aircraft owners and likely supported some flight training activities, contributing to the local aviation infrastructure on the outskirts of the Santiago Metropolitan Region.

Effectively zero. The land has been permanently repurposed with extensive and high-value industrial infrastructure. Re-acquiring the land and demolishing the existing distribution centers to restore the airport is economically and logistically unfeasible. There are no known plans or discussions about reopening Mansel Airport.
