The exact date of closure is not officially documented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery and aviation database records indicates a gradual decline and eventual closure. The airstrip was likely active into the early 2010s, with a noticeable lack of maintenance and encroachment from agricultural activity becoming apparent between 2013 and 2016. It is now officially listed as 'closed' in aviation databases.
The airport was a private airstrip, likely closed for economic reasons and a change in the operational needs of the property owner. There is no evidence of a major accident, military conversion, or urban development forcing the closure. Small, private airfields like this are often closed when the owner no longer operates an aircraft, sells the property, or finds the cost of maintenance and registration unjustified for its limited use.
The site is no longer an active airport. Satellite imagery shows the physical dirt/grass runway is still visible but is in a state of disrepair. It is overgrown with vegetation and appears to be used as an access road for farm vehicles. The surrounding land is actively used for agriculture, with crops planted very close to the edges of the former runway. The airstrip is not maintained and is unusable for any aviation activity in its current condition.
San Alfonso Airport was a private aerodrome ('aeródromo' in Spanish) with no major historical significance on a national level. Its importance was purely local, serving the Fundo San Alfonso, a large agricultural estate in the rural Alhué commune. Operations would have consisted of general aviation and agricultural aviation. This would include light, single-engine aircraft used for private transportation for the estate's owners/managers, as well as specialized aircraft for crop dusting, seeding, or aerial surveying of the farmland. It was never used for commercial passenger or cargo services.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening San Alfonso Airport. As a private facility, any initiative to restore and reopen it would depend entirely on the current landowner's desire and financial ability to do so. This would require significant investment to clear, regrade, and recertify the runway with Chile's Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC). Given that it fell into disuse, it is highly unlikely there is a current need for the airstrip, making reopening prospects extremely low to non-existent.
