Approximately 2017. The heliport was officially decommissioned following the construction and commissioning of its replacement, the new ground-level heliport LSXW.
Planned relocation due to operational and safety concerns. The heliport was located on the roof of a building (Ost-Sammelgebäude - OSGA) at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Its closure was necessary because: 1) The construction of new, taller buildings nearby, such as the SwissFEL (Free-Electron Laser), created flight path obstructions and safety issues. 2) Vibrations from helicopter landings and takeoffs interfered with highly sensitive scientific experiments conducted in the building below. 3) The rooftop location had inherent operational limitations compared to a ground-level facility.
The site of the former heliport is now simply the roof of the OSGA building within the secure campus of the Paul Scherrer Institute. It is no longer a functional or marked heliport. All helicopter operations for the PSI have been transferred to the new, purpose-built, ground-level heliport, 'Paul Scherrer Institut Heliport' (ICAO: LSXW), located approximately 500 meters to the southwest on the institute's grounds.
The Würenlingen Heliport (CH-0048) was a private heliport serving the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland's largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences. Its primary purpose was to facilitate official transport for the institute, including carrying personnel, VIPs, and time-sensitive or specialized materials. It played a role in ensuring the high-level connectivity and operational readiness of this nationally significant research facility. Operations were infrequent and strictly on a 'Prior Permission Required' (PPR) basis, not for public use. The identifier 'CH-0048' was a national or third-party database code, not an official ICAO designation.
There are no prospects for reopening this heliport. It was permanently and intentionally replaced by a modern, safer, and more capable facility (LSXW) as part of the long-term development plan for the Paul Scherrer Institute. The reasons for its closure are permanent.
