The airfield ceased operations in the early 2000s, with sources indicating the official closure occurred around 2002. The land was formally de-zoned from aviation use to allow for subsequent development.
The primary reason for the closure was land redevelopment. The municipal authorities of Porrentruy decided to re-zone the land occupied by the airfield for the creation of a new industrial and commercial park. The economic value of the land for development was deemed greater than its continued use as a small general aviation airfield, leading to the decision not to renew its operating permit.
The site of the former airfield has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now the 'Zone industrielle et artisanale Sur-la-Croix', a significant industrial and commercial park for Porrentruy. The area is occupied by numerous businesses, including logistics centers, manufacturing facilities, workshops, and commercial buildings. All traces of the runway, hangars, and other aviation infrastructure have been removed.
Porrentruy Airfield was a small, local general aviation airfield featuring a grass runway (approximately 650 meters long). Its main significance was serving as the home base for the regional flying club, the 'Groupe de vol Ă moteur de l'Ajoie' (Ajoie Motor Flying Group). Operations were limited to recreational flying, private pilot training, and leisure flights for the local community. It did not handle scheduled commercial flights, heavy aircraft, or military operations. It was a classic example of a community-focused airfield that fostered aviation interest in the Ajoie region of the Canton of Jura.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Porrentruy Airfield. The site has been permanently repurposed and is now a vital economic zone for the city. Furthermore, the aviation needs of the region have been met by a new, modern facility. The flying club that once operated from Porrentruy was instrumental in the development of the nearby Bressaucourt Airfield (ICAO: LSZQ), which opened in 2011 and now serves as the primary general aviation hub for the Canton of Jura.
Thanks for the update. I've marked the airport as closed for now, pending any more information.
Porrentruy Airport is closed. Must use Bressaucourt Airport since summer 2011. About 3 km SW of Porrentruy.
