Late October 2015. The final operations at the Rossboden site ceased on October 30, 2015, with all activities officially transferred to a new location on November 2, 2015.
The heliport was closed as part of a planned relocation driven by urban development. The site was located in the 'Chur West' district, an area designated by the city of Chur for significant commercial, retail, and residential expansion. The noise, safety zones, and operational footprint of the busy heliport were incompatible with the city's long-term development plans for a high-density urban area. The closure was a strategic decision to allow the city to grow while moving aviation activities to a more suitable, purpose-built location.
The former heliport site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. The hangars, landing pads, and all associated aviation infrastructure have been demolished. The land is now an integral part of the 'Chur West' commercial zone, occupied by large retail centers (such as the City West shopping complex), office buildings, car dealerships, and new road infrastructure. The transformation from an aviation hub to a bustling commercial district is complete.
For decades, the Chur Rossboden Heliport was the most important helicopter base in the canton of Graubünden and a critical piece of infrastructure for the entire Eastern Swiss Alps. It handled a wide variety of essential operations:
- **Air Rescue:** It was the long-time home base for the Swiss Air-Rescue's 'Rega 2' crew, one of the busiest in Switzerland, responsible for life-saving emergency medical and mountain rescue missions throughout the region.
- **Commercial Operations:** It was the main base for Heliswiss, and later its successor Swiss Helicopter AG. These companies conducted vital transport flights, including delivering construction materials to remote mountain sites, logging (heli-logging), assembling ski lifts, and supplying alpine huts.
- **Passenger Transport:** The heliport was a starting point for scenic flights over the Alps, a popular tourist activity, as well as private charter and taxi flights.
- **Government & Utility Support:** It supported various authorities in tasks like avalanche control, firefighting, and aerial surveillance.
There are zero prospects for reopening a heliport at the Rossboden location. The closure was final, and the land has been irrevocably re-purposed. All former operations were successfully and permanently relocated a few kilometers north to the municipality of Untervaz. Commercial operations now run from the new **Heliport Tarmac Untervaz (ICAO: LSTU)**, and the Rega air rescue base moved to its own new, state-of-the-art facility, also in Untervaz.
