While no single official reason is documented, the closure was almost certainly a result of the broader political and economic context of the Democratic Republic of Congo (then Zaire) in the 1990s. Key factors likely include: a severe economic downturn, the collapse of state infrastructure under Mobutu Sese Seko, and the widespread instability and conflict during the First (1996-1997) and Second (1998-2003) Congo Wars. These events would have made the maintenance and security of a remote airstrip untenable, leading to its abandonment.

The airport is completely abandoned and defunct. Current satellite imagery shows the former runway is entirely reclaimed by nature. It is heavily overgrown with dense vegetation, including shrubs and trees, rendering it completely unusable for any aviation purposes. The outline of the runway is still faintly visible from the air, but there is no remaining infrastructure such as buildings, hangars, or navigational aids. The site is currently unused.

Kala Airport was a classic remote bush airstrip. Its ICAO code, CD-0050, is a non-official identifier, suggesting it was likely a private or special-use field rather than a public national airport. Its primary significance was as a lifeline for the isolated village of Kala and the surrounding communities in the Congo Basin. It would have been used by small STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, such as Cessna Caravans, Pilatus Porters, or similar models. Operations likely supported missionary work, humanitarian aid (e.g., medical supply delivery by NGOs), or small-scale commercial activities, providing the only reliable, rapid access to a region with limited or impassable road networks.

There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening Kala Airport. The cost to clear the extensive vegetation, survey the ground, and reconstruct a safe runway surface would be substantial. Given the DRC's many other pressing infrastructure needs and the airstrip's remote location, government-led reopening is highly unlikely. Any future revival would likely depend on a private entity, such as a mining company or a large NGO, having a specific, funded requirement for air access to the immediate area.
