Circa 2005-2006
The primary reason for the closure was urban encroachment and real estate development. The land, known as Mulvihill Farm, was sold to developers for the construction of a new residential subdivision. As the city of Gatineau (specifically the Aylmer sector) expanded, the airfield's location became highly valuable for housing, making its continued operation as an airfield economically unfeasible for the landowners.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is now a residential housing subdivision. The area is filled with single-family homes and townhouses. The main road that runs through the heart of the former runway is Rue de la Tourbière. There are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other airport infrastructure. The land is permanently and irreversibly converted to urban residential use.
From 1971 until its closure, this site was the home of the Gatineau Gliding Club (Club de Vol à Voile de la Gatineau). For over 30 years, it was a vital center for recreational soaring and glider pilot training in Canada's National Capital Region. The club operated a fleet of gliders and tow planes from the grass runway. It served as a community hub for aviation enthusiasts and was instrumental in introducing hundreds of people to the sport of gliding. The airfield was a well-known local landmark for pilots and residents in the Aylmer area.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at this location. The complete and dense residential development of the land makes any future aviation activity impossible. The Gatineau Gliding Club successfully relocated its operations to the Pendleton Airport (ICAO: CPP3) in Pendleton, Ontario, where it continues to operate today.
