Circa 1995-1997. The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the phased closure of its parent facility, the National Defence Medical Centre (NDMC), which was officially announced in the 1995 Canadian federal budget.
The heliport was closed as a direct result of the closure of the National Defence Medical Centre. This decision was driven by major federal budget cuts and a strategic reorganization of the Canadian Forces Health Services, which aimed to integrate military healthcare with the civilian hospital system rather than maintain separate, costly military-only facilities. The NDMC was the last dedicated military hospital in Canada.
The site of the former heliport and the National Defence Medical Centre has been completely redeveloped. The original hospital building was demolished in the late 1990s. The land is now occupied by The Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre, which is located adjacent to The Ottawa Hospital - General Campus. The exact location of the former heliport pad is now part of the landscaped grounds and parking areas of this modern healthcare campus.
The heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure for Canada's premier military hospital. Its primary and sole function was to support medical operations. It handled military medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) helicopters, such as the CH-135 Twin Huey and later the CH-146 Griffon, transporting critically ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces personnel from other bases, training areas, and accident sites across the country. It provided a vital rapid-access point for patients requiring the specialized tertiary care offered at the NDMC and was an essential component of military medical readiness and response.
There are zero prospects for reopening this heliport. Its function has been made permanently obsolete by two factors: 1) The closure of its parent institution, the National Defence Medical Centre. 2) The construction of a modern, active heliport (The Ottawa Hospital - General Campus Heliport, ICAO: CPG7) at the adjacent civilian hospital, which now serves the entire medical complex, including any military patients requiring emergency transport.
