Circa 2003-2004. The airfield was listed as active in the 1999 Canada Flight Supplement but was confirmed to be closed by 2005, with aerial imagery from that year showing large 'X' markings on the runway.
Economic factors driven by urban sprawl. The airfield was a privately owned strip on the rural-urban fringe of Ottawa. As the city expanded, the value of the land for commercial and industrial development far exceeded its value as a small airfield. The property was ultimately sold to developers.
The site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. The land formerly occupied by the runway, hangars, and surrounding open space is now the location of a massive Amazon Fulfillment Centre (identified as YOW1), which opened in 2019. The entire area has been transformed into a major industrial and logistics park, and no physical trace of the original airfield remains.
Piperville Airfield, also known historically as Anderson Field, was a private registered aerodrome that served Ottawa's general aviation community for several decades. It was established and operated by the Anderson family. The airfield featured a single north-south turf and gravel runway (Runway 18/36), approximately 2,600 feet long. It was a classic example of a small, local airstrip supporting recreational flying, private aircraft owners, and potentially some minor flight training or maintenance operations. It provided an accessible and informal hub for aviation enthusiasts in the east end of the National Capital Region.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed for large-scale industrial use, making any return to aviation activities at this specific location impossible.
