Approximately 2018-2019. Satellite imagery shows the runway was still intact in 2018 but by 2020, the land was being cleared for construction. The official closure would have preceded the start of land clearing.
Economic reasons, specifically the sale of the land for real estate development. The airport was located in a rapidly growing suburban area of Ottawa (Findlay Creek), making the land extremely valuable for residential housing. The owners sold the property to a developer.
The site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. It is now a large residential housing subdivision, part of the expanding Findlay Creek community developed by Tartan Homes. The former runway and airport grounds have been replaced with streets, single-family homes, and townhouses. In a nod to its past, some of the new street names in the development reflect its aviation history, such as 'Propeller Private', 'Runway Private', and 'Cessna Private'.
Vernon Airport, also known locally as Stanley's Airfield, was a privately owned and operated grass airstrip. It was a significant hub for the local general aviation community for several decades. It primarily served recreational pilots, flight training activities, and owners of small single-engine aircraft and ultralights. It was known for its friendly, community-oriented atmosphere. The airport did not handle commercial or scheduled military operations; its importance was rooted in providing a space for private pilots south of Ottawa.
Zero. The land has been irrevocably transformed into a high-density residential area with permanent infrastructure. There are no plans or possibilities for the site to ever be used as an airport again.
