Circa 2009. The aerodrome's official designation was decommissioned following the closure of its primary operator, the Gray Rocks resort, in March 2009.
Economic reasons. The water aerodrome was intrinsically linked to the Gray Rocks Inn (L'Auberge Gray Rocks), which operated the seaplane base for its guests. When the historic resort ceased all operations and closed permanently, the commercial justification and operational support for the aerodrome disappeared, leading to its eventual closure and removal from official publications.
The site, Lac Ouimet, is a public lake now used exclusively for recreation. The former seaplane docks and facilities associated with the Gray Rocks resort have been removed. The lake is popular for swimming, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and non-motorized boating. The shoreline is heavily developed with private homes, cottages, and smaller hotels. While the official aerodrome is closed, the lake is technically still accessible to private seaplanes under general Transport Canada regulations for landing on uncertified waterways, but there are no dedicated aviation services, fuel, or infrastructure.
The Lac Ouimet Water Aerodrome was historically significant as the air portal to the iconic Gray Rocks resort, a major destination in the Laurentian Mountains for over a century. When active, it handled a vibrant mix of operations, including:
- **Tourist Flights:** Offering scenic aerial tours of the Mont-Tremblant region.
- **Air Taxi Services:** Flying guests in and out from cities like Montreal and Ottawa.
- **General Aviation:** Welcoming private pilots who flew their own seaplanes directly to the resort for vacation.
It was a classic and beloved seaplane base that embodied the golden age of recreational 'fly-in' tourism in Quebec.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening an official water aerodrome on Lac Ouimet. Several factors make a reopening highly improbable:
- The absence of a large commercial operator like the former Gray Rocks resort.
- Increased residential density around the lake, which would likely lead to community opposition over noise and safety concerns.
- The existence of alternative aviation facilities nearby, including the Lac Tremblant Water Aerodrome (CSL9) on a larger lake and the Mont-Tremblant International Airport (CYFJ).
