Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately late 1990s (around 1998). The airport was listed in the Canadian Flight Supplement until at least 1995 but was removed from publications by the early 2000s.

Reason for Closure

The closure was due to the sale and redevelopment of the land for private residential use. Located in the highly desirable Muskoka region, the property's value for real estate development far exceeded its value as a small private airfield. A large private estate was subsequently built on the property.

Current Status

The site is now a private residential estate. The outline of the former grass runway is still clearly visible from satellite imagery as a long, open meadow. However, a large luxury home and landscaped grounds have been constructed on the southern portion of the property, rendering the strip unusable for aviation. The land is strictly private property and is not accessible to the public.

Historical Significance

Windermere Airport was a private turf (grass) airstrip with a runway approximately 2,600 feet long. Its primary purpose was to serve the affluent guests of the nearby historic Windermere House resort, as well as other local cottagers with private aircraft. During its operational years, it provided a convenient fly-in option for visitors to the Lake Rosseau area, handling general aviation traffic such as single-engine piston aircraft (e.g., Cessnas, Pipers). The airport was a symbol of the exclusivity and accessibility of the Muskoka vacation region during the mid-to-late 20th century.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-value residential use. There are no plans, discussions, or prospects for the airport to ever be reopened, as its current use is incompatible with aviation operations.
