The exact date of closure is not officially recorded, but evidence suggests it occurred between the late 2000s and early 2010s. The airport was listed as active in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) as late as 2006, but was delisted in subsequent editions. Satellite imagery from the early 2010s shows the land had been fully converted to agricultural use, indicating the closure happened in the intervening years.

Gainsborough Airport was a small, private aerodrome that served the local general aviation community in and around the village of Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. Its significance was primarily local, providing a base for recreational pilots of the Gainsborough Flying Club and offering air access for light aircraft to this rural area. It was not a commercial or military facility. According to the 2006 Canada Flight Supplement, the airport operated under 'Prior Permission Required' (PPR) status and featured two turf runways: Runway 13/31 was 2600 feet long, and Runway 04/22 was 2200 feet long. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Gainsborough Airport. The land has been fully converted to productive agricultural use, and the economic and community need for a local airfield has not been re-established. Reopening the airport would require significant capital investment to re-purchase the land from its current owner and rebuild all necessary infrastructure, which is highly improbable.
