The airport was closed and de-listed sometime between 2000 and 2004. It was listed as an active aerodrome in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) published in 2000 but was no longer present in the 2004 edition.
The closure was primarily due to economic factors and redundancy. For a small community, the costs of maintaining the airstrip—including runway grading, lighting, and winter snow removal—were high relative to its usage. Furthermore, the proximity of the larger, better-equipped Dryden Regional Airport (CYHD), located just 25 km to the east with a paved runway and scheduled passenger services, made the Eagle River strip largely unnecessary for regional transportation.
The airport is permanently closed and the land has been repurposed for industrial use. Current satellite imagery clearly shows that the former runway is used as a log and lumber storage yard for a local forestry operation. Large piles of logs and wood chips completely cover the runway surface, making it unusable for any aviation activity. The site is now an industrial lot.
Eagle River Airport was a small municipal aerodrome operated by the Municipality of Machin. It featured a single gravel runway (10/28) that was 3,300 feet long and 75 feet wide. Its main purpose was to support general aviation for the local community. It played a vital role in the region's tourism industry, serving as a base for bush pilots and providing air access for fly-in fishing and hunting lodges in the remote wilderness of Northwestern Ontario. It also handled local charter flights and served as an important, albeit basic, transportation link for a relatively isolated community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Eagle River Airport. The prospects are considered non-existent due to several factors: the land is now in use for industrial purposes, the cost to clear the site and restore the runway would be substantial, and the region's aviation needs are adequately met by the nearby Dryden Regional Airport.
