The exact closure date is not officially documented, which is common for small private airfields. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the airport ceased operations between 2015 and 2017. Imagery from 2015 shows the runway becoming overgrown, and by 2017, the area was clearly being used for agriculture and a new large building was constructed on the site.
The airport was a private aerodrome, and the name 'Metz' likely refers to the family that owned and operated it. The closure was almost certainly for private economic or personal reasons, such as the sale of the property, retirement or death of the owner, or the high cost of maintenance. The land was subsequently repurposed for agricultural use, which was likely more profitable.
The site of the former airport has been fully converted into farmland. The grass runway no longer exists and the land is actively cultivated. A large, modern agricultural building has been constructed on the western portion of the former airfield, effectively eliminating any trace of its previous use as an airport.
Lumsden (Metz) Airport was a private general aviation facility. It featured a single turf runway, approximately 2600 feet long (designated 10/28). Its significance was local, serving as a base for recreational pilots and private aircraft owners in the Lumsden area. Operations would have consisted of light, single-engine aircraft for personal transport and leisure flying. It was not a commercial, transport, or military airport.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been completely repurposed for agriculture, and the construction of permanent farm buildings on the site makes any return to aviation use at this location infeasible and highly improbable.
