Approximately late 2012. The airport was officially decommissioned following the opening of its replacement, the Virden/R.J. (Bob) Andrew Field Regional Airport (CYVD), in October 2012.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, modern facility. The Virden (West) Airport, with its unpaved turf runways, was deemed inadequate to meet the growing demands of the region. The community required an all-weather airport with a paved runway to better support the local oil and gas industry, business travel, and critical services like air ambulance operations. The construction and opening of the new airport (CYVD) made the old Virden (West) field redundant and obsolete.
The site is now privately owned and has been returned to other uses. Current satellite imagery shows that the land is being used for agriculture. The faint outlines of the two former runways are still visible but are overgrown with grass and vegetation. A local road, Government Road Allowance, now bisects the former northeast-southwest runway. The hangars and buildings that were once part of the airport appear to be used for farm or private business storage.
Virden (West) served as the primary aerodrome for the Town of Virden and the surrounding area for many years. It featured two turf/grass runways arranged in an 'X' pattern. The airport was a hub for general aviation, catering to local private pilots, flight training, and agricultural aviation such as crop dusting. While it was an important local asset, its limitations prevented larger aircraft and all-weather operations, which ultimately led to the campaign for its replacement.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Virden (West) Airport. The community's significant investment in the modern Virden/R.J. (Bob) Andrew Field Regional Airport (CYVD) fully addresses its aviation needs. The original site has been decommissioned for over a decade, is in private hands, and has been partially repurposed, making any effort to reopen it economically unfeasible and unnecessary.
