Approximately early 2021. The airport was officially delisted and removed from the Nav Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) effective May 20, 2021, indicating it was no longer certified for aviation use.
Economic and operational decisions by its private operator. The airport was owned and maintained by an energy company to support operations at the Zama Gas Plant. Historically, the operator was Apache Canada Ltd., whose assets were acquired by Paramount Resources in 2017. The new operator likely deemed the airstrip redundant or no longer cost-effective to maintain to certified standards, leading to its formal decommissioning.
The airport is permanently closed and unmaintained. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the gravel runway is still physically present but is being used as an industrial access road and equipment staging/storage area for the adjacent gas plant. It is not marked or maintained for any aviation activity.
Zama Airport was a private aerodrome that played a critical role in the logistics of the remote Zama Lake oil and gas field. Its primary function was to facilitate the efficient movement of personnel for crew changes, transport of time-sensitive parts, and delivery of essential supplies to the Zama Gas Plant and surrounding wells. The gravel runway, approximately 3,500 feet long, handled a variety of charter aircraft, particularly STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capable planes like the Twin Otter and King Air. It provided a vital air link that bypassed the long and challenging drive from the nearest major town, High Level.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Zama Airport (CA-1032). The operational needs of the area are served by the nearby Zama Lake Airport (ICAO: CFT9), another private airstrip that remains active. The existence of this alternative facility makes the reopening of CA-1032 highly unlikely.
