Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa May 26, 2019

Reason for Closure

The heliport was closed due to the relocation of the hospital it served. The Stanton Territorial Hospital moved to a new, modern facility which opened on May 26, 2019. The new hospital was built with its own state-of-the-art, certified heliport (Yellowknife (New Stanton Territorial Hospital) Heliport, ICAO: CSH8), making the old heliport (CA-1025) redundant and leading to its decommissioning.

Current Status

The site of the former heliport is located at the old Stanton Territorial Hospital building, which has been repurposed and is now known as the Stanton Legacy Building. This building houses long-term care patients and other extended health services. The physical helipad, a concrete or asphalt pad, may still exist, but it has been decommissioned. All aviation markings have been removed, and it is no longer certified or used for any aviation operations. The area is now simply part of the grounds of the repurposed health facility.

Historical Significance

The Yellowknife (Regional Hospital) Heliport (CA-1025) was a critical piece of healthcare infrastructure for the Northwest Territories for several decades. Its primary and sole function was to support medical evacuation (medevac) operations. The heliport served as the main air access point for critically ill or injured patients being transported to the Stanton Territorial Hospital, the principal referral hospital for a vast and remote region. Operations consisted of air ambulance helicopters arriving from remote communities, industrial sites (such as diamond mines), and accident scenes across the territory. Its existence was vital for providing timely access to advanced medical care, significantly reducing transport times in life-threatening situations.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the CA-1025 heliport. Its function has been permanently and completely replaced by the new, superior heliport (CSH8) at the new Stanton Territorial Hospital, located approximately 1.5 km away. The new heliport is built to higher, modern safety standards, is better integrated with the new hospital's emergency department, and can accommodate a wider range of helicopters. The closure of CA-1025 was a planned and permanent part of the modernization of healthcare infrastructure in Yellowknife.
