Campbellton (Regional Hospital) Heliport

The primary reason for the closure was that the heliport no longer met modern Transport Canada safety and certification standards (specifically, it was not an H1-standard heliport). The facility was outdated and considered inadequate and unsafe for the larger, modern helicopters used by Air Ambulance New Brunswick. This regulatory non-compliance made direct hospital landings impossible.

The site of the original heliport (CA-1016) has been completely replaced. A new, modern, H1-standard heliport was constructed on the grounds of the Campbellton Regional Hospital and became operational in late 2021. This new facility now serves the purpose of the old one, restoring direct air ambulance access to the hospital. The new, officially registered heliport has the Transport Canada Location Identifier **CCH2**.

The Campbellton (Regional Hospital) Heliport was historically significant as the primary air access point for critical medical services in the Restigouche region of New Brunswick. Its main operation was handling medical evacuation (medevac) flights. It allowed for the rapid transfer of critically ill or injured patients directly to or from the hospital, which is crucial during the 'golden hour' of emergency medicine. After its closure and before its replacement was built, helicopters had to land at the Campbellton Regional Airport (CYCM), located about 15-20 minutes away by road. This necessitated a secondary transfer by ground ambulance, adding significant delays that could negatively impact patient outcomes.

There are zero prospects for reopening the heliport designated as CA-1016. It is permanently closed and has been physically replaced by the new, fully certified CCH2 heliport. The function of a heliport at the hospital has been restored by this new facility, making the old one obsolete.
