Circa 2020. The heliport was officially decommissioned in conjunction with the major redevelopment of the Mission Memorial Hospital. The demolition of the old East Wing/Acute Care Tower, where the heliport was located, began in the latter half of 2020.
The primary reason for the closure was the demolition and redevelopment of the hospital site. The old hospital tower that supported the helipad was torn down to make way for a new residential care facility. Functionally, the need for the heliport had also diminished over time as Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) in the region became more centralized, with critical trauma patients often being flown directly to larger, specialized regional trauma centers like Abbotsford Regional Hospital or Royal Columbian Hospital.
The site has been completely redeveloped. The old hospital tower and the heliport no longer exist. In its place, Fraser Health and the Mission Association for Community Living have constructed a new facility called 'The Residence in Mission'. This is a 90-bed building providing long-term residential care, assisted living, and supportive housing, which officially opened in 2023. The original heliport location is now occupied by this new structure.
The Mission (Memorial Hospital) Heliport was a critical piece of medical infrastructure for the city of Mission and the surrounding Fraser Valley communities. Its sole purpose was to support Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) operations. When active, it was used by the BC Ambulance Service to facilitate the rapid air transport of critically ill or injured patients from Mission to larger, more specialized tertiary care hospitals in Metro Vancouver. This capability was vital for time-sensitive cases such as major trauma, cardiac emergencies, and stroke, significantly reducing transport times compared to ground ambulance.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport at this location. The site has been permanently repurposed with the construction of the new residential care facility. Any future high-acuity patient transfers requiring air transport from the Mission area would be handled by landing at a nearby suitable location or, more commonly, by transporting the patient via ground ambulance to the modern, full-service helipad at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre for transfer.
