Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately March 9, 2020

Reason for Closure

The heliport was not closed due to economic reasons or an accident, but was permanently replaced. The original landing site, identified by the non-official code CA-1005, was a ground-level, non-certified landing zone. It did not meet modern Transport Canada safety standards and could not accommodate the larger, more advanced air ambulance helicopters (like the Sikorsky S-76) used by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS). The closure was the result of a planned infrastructure upgrade, culminating in the opening of a new, fully certified, elevated helipad at the same hospital.

Current Status

The original ground-level landing site is no longer in use for aviation. The entire function has been transferred to a new, modern, elevated helipad constructed on the hospital grounds. This new facility is officially registered with Transport Canada under the identifier TC LID: CFH2. The land where the old landing zone was located is now simply part of the Fraser Canyon Hospital property and has been repurposed for other hospital uses.

Historical Significance

The Hope (Fraser Canyon Hospital) Heliport was a critical piece of emergency medical infrastructure for the town of Hope and the remote communities throughout the Fraser Canyon. As a ground-level landing zone on the hospital property, it served as the primary transfer point for patients requiring urgent air evacuation (medevac) to larger, specialized trauma centers in the Lower Mainland. Operations were handled by the BC Air Ambulance service. Its existence was vital for providing timely critical care access in a geographically challenging region with long transport times by ground.

Reopening Prospects

None. The site was permanently decommissioned and replaced by a superior, certified facility (CFH2) at the same location. The new helipad meets all current safety and operational requirements, making the old landing zone obsolete. There are no plans or reasons to ever reopen the original non-certified site.
