Late 1990s, approximately between 1998 and 2000. The airfield was listed as operational in the 1993 VFR Navigation Chart but was noted as closed in the 2000 edition of the Canada Flight Supplement.
Urban and industrial encroachment. As the city of Edmonton expanded westward, the land occupied by the airfield became increasingly valuable for commercial and industrial development. The growth of the surrounding Winterburn Industrial Area made continuing airport operations impractical and economically unviable compared to the value of the land for development.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the Winterburn Industrial Park in west Edmonton. The former runway's alignment is now occupied by 215 Street NW. The entire area where the airfield once stood is now densely populated with warehouses, logistics depots, manufacturing facilities, and various commercial businesses. There are no visible remnants of the original airport infrastructure such as hangars, a terminal, or runway markings.
Also known as Stony Plain Airport, Winterburn Airfield was a privately owned, registered aerodrome that served Edmonton's general aviation community. It featured a single asphalt runway, designated 08/26, with a length of approximately 3,000 feet. During its active years, primarily through the 1980s and 1990s, it was a base for private aircraft owners, flight training activities, and small charter operations. It offered a convenient, smaller-scale alternative to the busier Edmonton City Centre Airport (now closed) and Edmonton International Airport (CYEG).
None. The prospect of reopening is zero. The land has been fully and permanently repurposed for dense industrial use. The original airport footprint is completely occupied by buildings and roads, making any future aviation use impossible.
